COLONIAL KICKS OFF YEAR 17

This Friday marked the beginning of our seventeenth year of pitching at Colonial. The faces have changed and the talent has grown with the years. With many seasons of playing this game, I thought I’d seen it all on the clay. However, almost every week I see a shot or two that still amazes. Yes folks, these guys are that good! I’m not talking about a lucky bounce or a double ringer, but the kind of shot that someone makes in a tight situation that requires pinpoint accuracy. Twenty one feet away, up and under, and stealing the point for the match. Topping the pile on your last shot to swing the scoring 4 or 5 points. Those are the truly amazing parts of this game that keep me interested. The casual player has no idea. It’s like any other sport. Some people just take the game to another level and I see examples of this all of the time here at CQC.

We were down a few folks this week and the torrential rains during the day made pitching questionable. The pit crew dried up the courts and we were good to go by seven. With just 11 players in attendance, we were fine with just two pits operational. Mark’s side will remain pristine until next week’s matches. Anthony “ Matching Shoes” Immordino was the leader of the pack this week going 4-0 with 14 ringers and a night high 12.25 ppg. that included two doubles for good measure. Also in mid-season form was Joey “The Mudder” Somers shooting well beyond his 3-2 record. He had a night high 17 ringers that included a double and three takeaways, finishing at 11.4 ppg. Nick “The Gimp” Lukasewycz had a good start to the season going 3-1 with 12 ringers and 10.5 ppg. Tom "Tinsel" Michaud rounded out the top honors with a 2-1 record tossing twelve ringers in three games and finishing up at 10.3 ppg.

Not bad for an iffy week one. We are hoping for a better turnout next week as Jeff and Jordan will be on catering duty. Week three is open for volunteers so let me know if you can go! With VFW starting their play next Thursday, all of the local quoit leagues will be operational. I am hoping that we will see a few more weekend tournaments this year as the past few years have been sparse. You can always count on our annual CQC tourney, but we need to get back to a few more events during the course of the summer. Tournament play is a different animal and I look forward to a few more venues this year. See everybody next week.
